We ordered "Climate Change Chocolate" for favors for our wedding. It's chocolate that comes bundled with a day's worth of carbon offsets. It was a huge hit with our guests (although the dark chocolate seemed more popular than the milk) and a great way for us to educate our guests about something that was important to us. They shipped the chocolate right after we ordered it, and it arrived in plenty of time for the wedding. We also used TerraPass's calculator to offset the total carbon emissions for our wedding. It was really easy to do, and it was good to know that we could have a carbon neutral wedding.

My husband and I wanted our wedding to reflect our environmental values. We found lots of ways to reduce the global warming impact of the wedding weekend, but because our families are from opposite coasts, one thing we couldn't avoid were the carbon emissions from our guests' travel. I used the TerraPass wedding calculator to determine the carbon footprint of our guests flights, drives, and hotel night stays. The total impact for a 115 person wedding with over half the guests flying across the country was 190,000 lbs, which is roughly equivalent to the average annual emissions from 16 cars. Guest travel had the biggest carbon impact of any other part of the wedding weekend, so we added the cost to balance out those emissions as a non-negotiable line item in our budget. This meant we skipped party favors for our guests, but we got great feedback that they preferred their offset to anything else. [Note: I would have purchased a wedding TerraPass regardless, but in the spirit of full disclosure, I am an employee of TerraPass.]
